Duke of Montrose

2013 - Brooklyn, NY, USA

Architect: Taylor and Miller Architecture

The Duke of Montrose is a whisky bar in Brooklyn that was designed by Taylor and Miller and buit by one of the bar’s owners, Steve Owen. As a built work, the project is based on the idea of taking what is typically a two dimensional pattern - the herringbone pattern - and translating it into three-dimensional space and form.

The lighting accentuates the undulating surfaces of herringbone through uplight and downlight grazing that enhances the presence of the texture. The lighting is also deployed in discreet spatial layers, allowing for different architectural surfaces in the foreground and background to subtly play of one another compositionally.
