Salvage Swings

2019 - Roosevelt Island, New York, NY, USA

Architect: Somewhere Studio

A playful and inviting summer pavilion is created using cross-laminated timber panels in a New York City park. The installation consists of 12 repetitive swing structures that frame both the micro-scale of the individual swings and broader views of the park and surrounding city. The lighting design approach works on this dual scale also. Linear LED lighting wraps the swing windows, encouraging curiosity and interaction between the different modules. At the scale of the city, the lighting approach allows the pavilion to become a lantern on the banks of the East River.
